About the lining

How custom drapery is built.

A drapery panel is not 1 piece of fabric hung on a rod. It is face fabric, lining and, where the weight calls for it, an interlining. Together they decide how the drape hangs, how it blocks light, and how long it lasts before the sun eats the face. We spec the layers against the window, not against the price sheet.

Face The fabric the room sees
Lining Weight, drape and light control
Interlining Insulation and body for heavy fabric

How a drapery job runs

How a drapery job runs.

Drapery starts and ends at the window. The middle steps happen on our bench.

Step 01

On-site measure

We come to the window with a ladder and a rod-height ruler. Windows are never square in the drop, and a measurement taken off the frame from a photo will hang wrong.

Step 02

Approval

Fabric, lining, header style, drop and hardware all agreed before we cut. You approve a sample panel where the fabric is unfamiliar or the light is unusual.

Step 03

Cut and sew

Panels are cut, seamed, lined and hemmed in our own workroom. The header is built to the fullness that fits the rod, not the fullness that fits a stock size.

Step 04

Install

We mount the hardware, hang the panels, dress the pleats and adjust the drop on site. The drape reads right the moment we leave, not after it has settled for a week.

Before you write

Drapery questions we get most.

If yours is not here, put it in the message box and we will answer it in the estimate.

Do you measure the windows, or do I need to?

We measure. Windows are rarely square in the drop, and drapery cut to a measurement someone else took usually hangs wrong. We come to the room with a ladder and take the measurements ourselves.

Can I supply my own fabric?

Yes. COM is welcome from any book your designer or you specify. Ship it to the workroom the job is being run from, and we build to it.

What about blackout, or blocking heat from a big window?

Blackout lining, thermal lining and interlining all address different problems. Blackout is for a proper dark, thermal is for heat and cold, interlining adds body and insulation to heavy face fabric. We pick the layer against the room, not the catalogue default.

How long from measurement to install?

Usually 3 to 4 weeks once fabric has landed. Simple roman shades on stock lining are faster; heavily interlined drapery in a custom fabric takes longer. We give you a working date with the estimate.

Do you supply the rods and hardware too?

Yes. Rods, tracks, brackets and finials are sourced with the fabric so the whole treatment lands together, and installed on site so the drop and stackback are right the first time.
